Wi-Fi Proves to Be a Boon for VoIP Services historically there has been little doubt in anyone’s mind that the crucial stumbling block for VoIP services over mobile phones has been the boundaries of Internet services offered. Wireless data networking have so far been fairly limited quality, even when being able to deliver healthy speeds at certain times.
For VoIP, the important factor is not the speed of the Internet connection exclusively, but the reliability and the ease of connectivity. If the network drops packets on a ongoing basis, is unreliable, or takes an inordinate amount of time to connect, it is more or less unusable as a VoIP service. VoIP doesn’t take up too much bandwidth as such, but it does place a premium on dependability.
Which is reasons why it has always done better on Wi-Fi networks rather than those provided by the telecom carriers.
Wi-Fi meets all the requirements for VoIP such as durability and speed.
It is in fact, only a notch below wired Internet connections. It is becoming more and more ubiquitous in hotels, coffee shops, and significantly in homes, one cannot rely on a Wi-Fi network always being available. If you are commuting Whether one is driving, or is at the airport, the lack of reliable Wi-Fi connectivity forces users to fall back to either the wireless data networks, or the voice minutes provided by their telecom carrier.
What is were in need of therefore, is more ubiquitous Wi-Fi wherever we are. Unfortunately Wi-Fi technology is such that it’s difficult to make a single carry far enough for it to be used by a bigger number of people. The only organization who has the power, money, infrastructure, and legal right to provide a huge network for public use is the fed government itself. Which is why the decision of the London government to provide free Wi-Fi for public use is so significant.
The Internet is a great asset. With openly accessible Wi-Fi, one can just imagine the added benefit for services such as VoIP not to mention marketing and business.
Free government wireless Internet would probably act as the last nail in the coffin of the outdated model of the telecom providers.
There’s no getting away from the fact that VoIP is the future and that new technological developments will only serve to cement that fortune. It’s only a matter of the time before new and refined networks like 4G, or other unique new technologies rise up and carry the ship of VoIP to its place.
